WAITOC Media Release - December 2013

Groundbreaking Pilot Initiative on "Workforce Development" Aboriginal Tourism in the West Kimberley and getting ready to showcase Perth Aboriginal Tourism as a major event in 2014.

Western Australia Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC) Chairman, Doc Reynolds, is pleased to announce that WAITOC and Service Skills Australia have agreed to work together to roll out a groundbreaking new “Workforce Development” initiative in the West Kimberley during the first half of 2014. Mr Reynolds said "This is a pilot initiative and WAITOC plans to roll this initiative out across the other RTO regions next year onwards".

Pictured with WAITOC Treasurer Robert Taylor at the recent contract signing ceremony, Stephen Ollerenshaw, Program Manager, Workforce Futures, Service Skills Australia, Sydney said that "it is exciting to be working in partnership with WAITOC enhancing skills and knowledge around workforce development with Aboriginal tourism businesses in the West Kimberley region."

In forming this relationship, WAITOC and Service Skills Australia have also signed an MOU to collaborate on a joint position paper in relation to the West Kimberley Workforce Development initiative for the Indigenous employment and training review on behalf of the Prime Minister’s office.

WAITOC will also be announcing further exciting developments in Aboriginal Tourism in 2014, including planning already under way with Perth Convention Bureau, City of Perth, Experience Perth and Study Perth for an inaugural Aboriginal Tourism Showcase Event in the second half of 2014.

Simon Haigh said that “with WAITOC announcing some recent groundbreaking initiatives in 2013, 2014 and onwards look to be very exciting for Aboriginal tourism in WA as it continues to grow and contribute to the WA economy”.
