New Aboriginal Events Scheme

Oct 9, 2017 -- Posted by : admin

The AU$ 150,000 Scheme is set to

  • Support the delivery of more Aboriginal festivals in Western Australia
  • Create new opportunities to showcase one of the oldest living cultures on earth
  • Embrace visitor interest in the Aboriginal culture

“Aboriginal events and performances are a popular drawcard for visitors to WA – they represent a core part of our cultural life and bring together a vibrant display of traditional art, song, and dance - with dance being a unique aspect, an expression of knowledge about the stories of ancestral legends and history”, said Robert Taylor, CEO of WAITOC – Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council.

Cultural Events and Festivals mark celebratory occasions for Aboriginal communities to entertain, to be entertained and demonstrate love and unity to families and kin. WAITOC sees tourism as a practical, important way to provide an economic avenue for these communities to prosper and, at the same time, to support the sustainability of their authentic cultural heritage.

The funding, secured in partnership between WAITOC and Tourism WA, is supported by Royalties for Regions as part of a record Regional Events Scheme Pool of AU$ 1 million.

The new Regional Aboriginal Events scheme is open to events held between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. Event holders can request funding between $5,000 and $50,000. Applications close on Tuesday 12th December, 2017.
