Membership Background

WAITOC's vision is to raise the profile of Indigenous Tourism on a State, National and International level.

The Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operator's Committee (WAITOC) was established in October 2000 and became an Incorporated Association in May 2002. WAITOC believes that Indigenous Tourism is a fairly unique industry in that it allows Indigenous people to participate at a real and meaningful level while still maintaining and valuing their cultural heritage.

WAITOC is an autonomous not for profit Association comprising representatives from the ATSIC regions within Western Australia providing advice and information to all relevant State Government agencies in Western Australia. The Committee also has a role in assisting the development of a dynamic Indigenous tourism industry sector in Western Australia by helping existing and emerging Indigenous tourism operators.

The WAITOC Board will meet regularly with key stakeholders, both within government and private industry to raise issues by members and develop collaborative and joint venture opportunities for the Indigenous and Non-Indigenous tourism industry.

The sector specific criteria developed in conjunction with the National Tourism Accreditation Program will ensure that Indigenous tourism products are promoted in an authentic, culturally sensitive and appropriate manner. WAITOC will actively work with members to gain accreditation with the Tourism Council Western Australia and WAITOC. This accreditation will provide the opportunity to promote their product as an authentic Indigenous cultural experience.

WAITOC intends to keep members informed on a regular basis on what is happening within the tourism industry, with a specific focus on Indigenous Tourism. Information will be disseminated through quarterly newsletters, website, networking forums, and training workshops.
